Freedom Festival | Hull 2025
Hull’s flagship summer arts celebration, Freedom Festival, returns from 28th to 31st August, transforming the city into a vibrant stage for live music, theatre, dance, circus and public art rooted in themes of freedom, democracy and creative expression.
This year’s edition features 76 experiences by 29 artists, with over 115 hours of free entertainment across streets, squares and venues in Hull.
The programme is spread across three buzzing city zones, from large-scale shows in Queen Victoria Square and music on Humber Street to immersive theatre at Hull Truck and waterfront installations near the marina.
While most of the programme is free to access, a selection of headline performances are ticketed, including two major shows at Hull Truck Theatre:
The Genesis (28–30 Aug)
Denmark’s Copenhagen Collective presents a bold circus-theatre production featuring 17 elite acrobats, stunning aerial choreography, and a haunting original score.
Told without words, this visceral performance explores connection, tension and physical poetry through seamless ensemble movement and striking visuals.
It’s a rare chance to see internationally acclaimed circus artistry up close in Hull. Tickets from £21.50 (concessions £16.50).
The Torch (28–29 Aug)
British-Ghanaian artist Kobby Taylor leads this dynamic piece of gig-theatre that blends live Afrobeat, jazz, harp, hip hop, and spoken word.
Inspired by his grandfather, legendary musician Ebo Taylor, the show features bold storytelling and live remixing with harpist Stephanie Halsey and synth artist Vivek Santhosh, creating an energetic, intimate portrait of heritage and rhythm. Tickets from £13.50 (concessions £11.50).
On Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st, the festival takes over Hull’s public spaces with parades, circus acts, dance, interactive installations and performances for all ages—all completely free.
With stages and pop-ups across Queen Victoria Square, Princes Dock Street, Trinity Market, Humber Street and more, there’s something to discover around every corner.
Whether you’re drawn to spectacular outdoor shows, experimental art, or music with a message, Freedom Festival 2025 invites everyone to take part in a bold, city-wide celebration of culture, creativity and community.
