Immerse yourself in the world of Gothic fiction and uncover its profound influence on the Brontës’ writing in this special seminar day, part of Haworth Festival, led by Dr Sam Hirst, Gothic specialist and Teaching Associate in Romanticism at the University of Sheffield.

Throughout the day, you’ll delve into how the Brontës absorbed, transformed and expanded the Gothic tradition — from their early juvenilia to the haunting landscapes and characters of their most famous novels, and on to their lasting legacy in Gothic literature and film.

The day includes five sessions:

  • 10–11am: Exploring the Brontës’ Gothic Influences — An introduction to the early Gothic genre and the texts the Brontës read.
  • 11am–12pm: The Gothic and the Brontës’ Juvenilia — Kidnappings, doubles, necromancy and more in their youthful works (read The Foundling by Charlotte in advance if you can).
  • 12–1pm: Lunch break — Bring your own lunch or join the group at Cobbles & Clay café.
  • 1–2pm: The Gothic Worlds of the Brontë Sisters — Discover how the sisters reimagined Gothic tropes in novels like Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.
  • 2–3pm: The Gothic Afterlives of the Brontës — From Victorian spiritualists to Gothic films and modern adaptations, explore the Brontës’ enduring impact.
  • 3–4pm: Special session in the Museum library — A rare chance to see Gothic-related treasures from the Parsonage’s collection up close with the Principal Curator.

Places are limited and early booking is essential for this unique literary experience.
